“Probably best known for featuring the late Michael Hutchence of INXS, Richard Lowenstein’s apparently semi-autobiographical film “Dogs In Space” is an ensemble piece set in a chaotic Melbourne share-house / squat in 1979.
It’s by no means a perfect film, but it features an awesomely eclectic postpunk soundtrack (including a personal favourite, “Shivers”, from Nick Cave’s early band The Boys Next Door), and a bunch of engaging young Aussie actors such as Nique Needles and Saskia Post.
When I first saw this film, I was 16 and utterly desperate to escape the claustrophobic dependency of schoolgirl existence and begin my “real life”. Somehow, “Dogs In Space” epitomised the gritty, inner-urban bohemian “reality” I spent all my time fantasising about. It blew my mind.”
